The Old Codger is a big shot who has the ability to knock his target's tick counter down to zero, effectively stalling its next move. He is also the only unit who can kill another unit, the Dirigible, in one shot, without the aid of bonuses or cards.

[edit] Strategy

Being a rather slow big shot, the Old Codger is not favoured for playing on bigger maps. He proves especially ineffective for scenarios which require him to be moving long distances, like Cattle Rustling and Gold Rush.

He is however, one of the best units in game to protect or control an area. When used properly, he can effectively protect a claim in Claim Jumping, and is able to control the totem bases in Totem Building. It is important to choose his target wisely, since his attack can buy time. For example, if an opponent's unit is trying to place a totem piece on a totem base in a game of Totem Building, the Old Codger can stall his movement by knocking the opponent's unit's tick counter back to zero. This would provide time for the player to execute moves to stop his opponent from scoring with that particular unit. His strong attack against Air units, combined with his tick-reset ability, is also useful on maps where Air units can escape easily by crossing over ledges, canyons or obstacles after stealing a nugget from a claim, maps such as Adobe Ruins, Buzzard Break, Desert Crossing and Devil's Tower.

As with the Dream Catcher, the Old Codger can immobilize a unit by attacking it constantly, however this requires either the Hustle bonus or some luck against a human opponent since who gets to go first is random. This will work against bots however, as long as you put in an advance order.
