Gold coins, 
, are the secondary currency of Bang! Howdy, the primary being scrip. They serve to provide the game with a microcurrency payment system, rather than the traditional subscription-based payment system.

[edit] Purchasing coins directly
Gold coins can be purchased with US Dollars, with the cost varying between roughly $0.25 to $0.20 per coin, depending on the volume purchased. Available payment methods include credit card, PayPal, check or money order (sent directly to Three Rings), Coinstar, PayByCash, electronic bill payment, and SMS text message in certain European countries. After the payment is received, the gold coins will automatically be credited to the appropriate account, although this process may take a few minutes.

Although players cannot exchange money directly, the bank allows players to exchange scrip they have earned for gold coins, or coins for scrip, based on a bidding system; players post offers to buy or sell gold coins, and their offers are matched with other players' offers to allow for transactions, without any direct Sheriff involvement. Players may only use the exchange if they posses a Gold Exchange License, available at the General Store for 1. As a result, new players can only access the gold exchange by first buying gold with real money, and then purchasing the Gold Exchange License.

In Puzzle Pirates, doubloons act as the equivilent of gold coins, right down to the USD price. However, only "doubloon oceans" use this microcurrency: The "subscriber oceans" use the traditional subscription model.

- Prior to Release 2007-06-11, you did not need a license to access the bank.
- During the initial stage of the beta, gold coins were not purchased with real-life money, but were instead provided in an unlimited quantity at the bank for 1000 scrip each.
